Robert G. Matalik, Sr., 89, of Burgettstown, passed away Sunday morning September 13, 2026 in his home after a brief illness.
He was born on July 24, 1937 in Burgettstown a son of the late George and Helen Stefura Matalik.
A 1955 graduate of the Union High School in Burgettstown, he served in the United States Air Force in New Mexico and Iceland. While in the Air Force, he excelled at baseball, earning him a spot on the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets rosters.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Bob worked in civil service before starting a long, fulfilling career with Allegheny Airlines and US Air where he was the lead inspector, retiring in 1999 at age 62.
Bob was an avid softball player in the area. He enjoyed cutting grass, tinkering and most of all, spending time with his family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
His loving wife of 65 years, Fredericka "Freddie" Bruno Matalik, who he married on July 22, 1961, survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his two children Robert Matalik, Jr. of N. Myrtle Beach, SC and Jill Walters of N. Canton, OH; daughter-in-law Shelley Matalik of Tampa, FL; five grandchildren Brittany (David) Cook of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, Alyssa (Brett) Tokarski of Burgettstown, Nick (Alyssa) Matalik of Indiana, PA, Tyler Walters of N. Canton, OH, and Ryan Matalik of Tampa, FL; five great grandchildren Lily and Max Cook, Colton Tokarski, Olive and Wren Matalik; and many nieces and nephews.
The last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death in addition to his parents by his son Richard Matalik; son-in-law Peter Walters; daughter-in-law Brenda Ellen Matchett Matalik on August 21, 2026; six brothers George, Charles, Joseph, James, Thomas and Aemil Matalik; and two sisters, Helen Knauss and Margaret Castner.
Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Loc Tran at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish, where Bob was an active parishioner, 1109 Main Street, Burgettstown, PA 15021.
Interment with full military honors accorded by the United States Air Force will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.
Those wishing to remember Mr. Matalik in a special way can make a memorial donation in his honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Shriner's Hospital for Children.
