Richard William Weir passed away peacefully on September 30, 2026, in McMurray, Pennsylvania, at the age of 88.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Thelma, with whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage. He is also survived by his sons, Richard (Carolyn) and Michael (Wendy); his grandchildren, Alison, Jonathan, Catherine, Elizabeth, and Samantha; his brother, Dr. Thomas Weir (Norma); and his sister, Kathy Campbell. He was the beloved son of the late Thomas Francis Weir and Catherine Engemann Weir.
Born in McKeesport and raised in Brentwood, Richard learned the value of discipline from an early age. As a teenager, to help support his family, he worked as a caddy at South Hills Country Club and as a pinsetter at Whitehall Bowling Alley.
A graduate of Saint Basil's High School, Duquesne University, and the Army Intelligence Command School at Fort Holabird, Maryland, Richard proudly served in the United States Army as an Intelligence Specialist.
Following his military service, he enjoyed a long and distinguished career with United States Steel Corporation, where he worked in systems operations for 36 years.
Richard was deeply devoted to his family and to the Catholic Church and he cherished the time he spent with those he loved. He had a lifelong passion for basketball and was an enthusiastic supporter of the greater Pittsburgh basketball community for more than 50 years. A dedicated and competitive player into his early 70s, Richard was a regular at the outdoor courts in South Park where he was always ready for a pickup game and never far from the action.
Richard will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. His legacy of devotion to family, faith, discipline, and community will be remembered and cherished by those whose lives he touched.
All services will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to Freyvogel Slater Funeral Directors, 112 Fort Couch Road, Bethel Park, 15241.
