John Michael Burkus, 75, of Mount Pleasant, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2026. Born on May 9, 1951, in Scottdale, PA, John spent most of his life in the community he loved and became known as a familiar face to nearly everyone he met.

If you knew John, chances are you knew his gift for friendship. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, quickly turning acquaintances into lifelong friends. Whether he was tailgating and cheering on Pitt football, enjoying a long weekend in Atlantic City with his wife, Suzanne, swapping stories at the club, or spending time on the golf course, John found joy in these moments, the people who shared them, and life’s simple pleasures. Among those pleasures, few rivaled a good hot sausage sandwich.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Burkus, and his parents, John Burkus and Ann (Hardik) Burkus. He is survived by his children, Melissa Burkus (Katherine) and John Burkus (Stephanie); his five grandchildren, Elliott, Lucy, Colton, Avery, and Trent; his sister, Susan Burkus; and his brother, Michael Burkus (Terri), along with many friends whose lives were made brighter by knowing him. 

Friends and family will be received Saturday, August 29th from 11-5 at Slater-Rega Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., 730 W. Main street Mt Pleasant.
