James Douglas Howell, formerly of Mt. Lebanon, died on July 14, 2026, at the age of 77.
Jim will be remembered as a man who believed in the dignity of hard work and a life of service to others. Born on August 3, 1948, in Oakfield, New York, he graduated from Kent State University before embarking on a distinguished career as an architect. As a longtime partner at VEBH Architects (now Draw Collective), Jim contributed to projects including St. Clair Hospital, numerous buildings across the Waynesburg University campus, and schools throughout the Keystone Oaks School District.
Beyond his profession, Jim was deeply committed to his community. He served as Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 22, was elected Commissioner of Mt. Lebanon from 1995 to 1998 and was a devoted member of Christ United Methodist Church. Through the church’s support of the Nyadire Connection, he made several trips to Africa, helping build irrigation systems to support local communities.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon; his son, Breyden (Karen); his five cherished grandchildren, Marley, Miles, McKenna, Martin, and Charli; his sisters, Betts Kozak (Bill), Barb Abrams (Neal), and Martha Abrams (Morrie); his brother, Richard; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher (Kristen).
