Obituary

Helen Darnell Eaton

Age 82, of Mt. Lebanon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

Daughter of the late John and Ollie Frangowlakis, Helen proudly held the undisputed crown as the spirited youngest of twelve brothers and sisters—a role that undoubtedly forged her trademark stubbornness, sharp wit, and fearless, independent streak. For 62 incredible years, she was the beloved wife and lifelong best friend of Larry N. Eaton; a masterclass in how opposites attract, he was her steady anchor and she kept him on his toes, walking hand-in-hand through life with commitment, grace, and unfailing love.

She was the devoted, delightfully vibrant mother of Helen Darnell (Bruce) Etherton, Larry N. (Linda) Eaton II, and Joshua D. (Tammy) Eaton, teaching them early on that love should be bold, unconditional, and fierce. As "MawMaw," she reigned supreme and shamelessly spoiled her grandchildren: Kyle (Tierra), Kaelyn (Michael), Kent (Gracie), Olivia, Alexander (Liv), Brian (Bridget), Jacob (Harley), Matthan, Rylee (Dom), and Samantha. Just when anyone thought her capacity for adoration was full, she became "Great-MawMaw," and her heart grew three sizes bigger for Cecil, Eleanor, and Helayna. She also leaves behind generations of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who knew her door was always open, her advice was completely unfiltered, and her corner was the safest place to be.

Helen was larger than life and entirely, unapologetically herself—whether you liked it or not. She was strong-willed, hilariously sharp, and gloriously unpredictable. She firmly believed restaurant menus were meant to be enjoyed, and she was always happiest with good music playing, a football game on, or settling into a Hallmark movie or Disney classic. She looked forward all year to the fun chaos of our annual beach vacations, especially the cherished tradition of "seafood night," but her real happy place was simply wherever her family was gathered. They were her whole universe, and there was simply nowhere else she’d rather be.

Friends and family are welcome Friday, October 16th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp., 15220, (412) 563-2800.

Interment will be private to the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Helen's honor to Gallagher Hospice, whose compassionate care brought comfort and peace.
